What got you into fashion? What made you love it so much?
I’ve always paid attention to how I looked, and I’ve always loved to wear nice outfits. I guess having a mother who takes care of herself 24/7, and who likes to be well-dressed helped a lot. I don’t think I’ve ever seen my mother looking bad. She’ll always have makeup on, her jewelry on, and wear a cute outfit even if it’s Sunday and we’re just staying home. It’s a way to “respect yourself and the others” according to her. I remember being on her knees and reading fashion magazines as a kid. From a very young age, I knew what colors looked good together, what fabrics felt good on my skin etc.
Now what got me into fashion? I’d blame Vogue Paris and Mary-Kate Olsen. My very first issue of Vogue Paris was the August 2005 issue with Demi Moore on the cover. I remember it so well. A white background and Demi wrapped in the American flag. I remember buying it with my pocket money, in the middle of the afternoon during the week, hoping no one would see me. At that time I was kind of ashamed to buy a “girls magazine”. My father being quite a macho man, I was so scared of how he’d react if he saw that. Therefore I had it hidden under my bed for a long time. I used to open it at night and I was so filled with wonder when I looked at the photographs. It definitely helped developing my sense of aesthetic. I wish I hadn’t lost this issue… Now why MK? She played a big part in making me interested in designers. Her sense of style always fascinated me and I started looking for who made the things she wore. Finding out that this bag she was wearing was Balenciaga made me do some researches about what/who Balenciaga was, then I started looking at Balenciaga collections and so on.
As my interest in fashion kept growing, I discovered great websites where I could follow the collections, I bought VP more regularly, started picking my favorite models, then my favorite photographers…
What made me love it? First, I’ve always been responsive to a certain sense of aesthetic and it “fed” my sense of aesthetic. Then, I’ve always been fascinated by the ability of designers to always be creative. Fashion is an art form. Wearing a designer piece is like wearing a piece of art to me.
Fashion really helped me expanding my horizons, on many levels.
“I think most people don’t actually know me. They know the projection of me that I use to sell things. And they know me from an expression of material beauty. I’m actually very introverted. I’m very shy. I’m very emotional.”— Tom Ford, Interview Magazine (2011)
